Frank Butler founded Catalina Yachts in 1969 in North Hollywood, California, after years building small boats under the Wesco Marine and Coronado Yachts names. The first Catalina 22 sold well enough that a 27 and a 30 followed within a few years, and by the 1980s Catalina had become the largest sailboat builder in the United States, adding Florida production capacity through the acquisition of Morgan Yachts. Butler stayed at the helm until his death in 2020, and the ownership that came after him proved far less steady, ending in a 2025 sale that collapsed within months, a factory eviction, and an asset auction in 2026 before the brand was bought out of that wreckage and restarted in the same Largo, Florida plant.
Catalina's range runs from trailerable weekend boats in the mid twenties up through family cruisers in the low to mid thirty foot range, all fiberglass sloops built around a wide cockpit and a simple hull rather than a racing pedigree. The company has never chased performance extremes, favoring shoal draft options and interior layouts that put headroom and stowage ahead of fine joinery. Hull numbers run into the thousands for the popular sizes, and enough design carries over between model years that parts and rigging often interchange across a run.
Catalina owners talk about their model's owners association, the Catalina 30 group, the 34, the 320 and so on, as much as they talk about the factory itself, and that says something about where the real support lives. Those clubs handle parts sourcing, rigging fixes and one design racing rules that keep older hulls sailing and resale prices reasonable long after a given model left the line. That informal network is the reason a secondhand Catalina tends to hold its value despite the brand's recent troubles, since the 2025 ownership collapse and factory shutdown gave new boat buyers real reason to ask pointed questions about warranty and parts continuity going forward. Anyone buying an older hull, though, is buying into a fleet that has largely kept itself running with or without the company's cooperation.
