Malibu builds V-drive inboard tow boats made specifically for wakeboarding, wake surfing and water skiing. It doesn't build pontoons, outboards or personal watercraft, just dedicated towboats and the wake shaping gear that goes with them.

The Story

About Malibu

Malibu started in 1982 in Merced, California, where Bob Alkema and Steve Marshall began building ski boats out of a small shop, turning out just a couple of hulls a week at first. Demand outran that shop fast: by the late 1980s the company held a real slice of the ski boat market, and a second plant went up in Loudon, Tennessee in 1992 to serve buyers east of the Mississippi. Loudon eventually became the company's headquarters. Malibu went public in 2014, and since then the corporate parent has bought its way into other boat categories through Axis, Cobalt, Pursuit, Maverick and related brands, while the Malibu nameplate itself has stayed focused on towboats.

What Malibu builds now is a lineup of V-drive inboard hulls sized for wakeboarding, wake surfing and water skiing, from smaller sport hulls up to its largest LSV and M-series flagships. The brand is best known for Surf Gate, a hydraulic system that shapes a rideable wave on either side of the boat so surfers can swap sides without turning the boat around, plus adjustable ballast tanks, a Power Wedge hydrofoil, and Monsoon marine engines developed with GM. None of that is aimed at cruising or fishing. Every design choice on a Malibu is made for towing a rider, and the boats show it in the cockpit layout and the tight turning radius.

Owners generally rate Malibu's reliability on par with Mastercraft and Nautique, its closest rivals, and the fit and finish holds up well if the boat is flushed and winterized properly, which inboard V-drives require more than most people expect. The dealer network is deep in wake sport hubs and thinner elsewhere, but OEM parts move through both dealers and a healthy aftermarket, so keeping an older Malibu running is rarely a real problem. Resale value tends to stay strong on well kept, Surf Gate equipped models, less so on older boats without it, and the buyers who come back for a second or third Malibu are almost always people who ski, wakeboard or surf and want nothing else from the boat.
