MasterCraft traces back to 1968, when waterskiing instructor Rob Shirley modified a Ski Nautique hull and started building his own boats in a two stall horse barn on his in laws' farm in Maryville, Tennessee. The company grew through the water ski era, then found a second wind as wakeboarding and later wake surfing took off. It has been headquartered in Vonore, Tennessee for decades and became a publicly traded company on the Nasdaq under the ticker MCFT. In 2026 its parent, MasterCraft Boat Holdings, combined with Marine Products Corporation, bringing the Chaparral and Robalo brands into the same corporate family.
Today the range is built almost entirely around towing sports. The ProStar is aimed at tournament skiing, the X and XT series cover wakeboarding, the XStar targets big air riders, and the NXT line is the entry point into the same wake and surf hardware. Every model centers on ballast and wake shaping systems rather than general cruising comfort, and the company holds a long list of patents tied to that hull and wave engineering. It does not build fishing boats or pontoons under the MasterCraft name itself, those categories live with sister brands Crest, Balise, Chaparral and Robalo under the same parent.
Owners consistently point to hull quality, clean wiring and a wake that stays predictable across a wide speed range, and resale values tend to hold up better than most of the towboat field. The dealer network is smaller than a mainstream powerboat brand's, so parts and warranty work can mean a longer drive in some regions, and complaints about slow customer service response still turn up in owner forums from time to time. None of that has stopped competitive skiers and wakeboarders from staying loyal to the badge, and a decade old ProStar or X series boat can still command real money on the used market, which says more about the brand than anything on its own site.
