The Story

About Polaris

Polaris traces back to 1954, when Edgar Hetteen, Allan Hetteen and David Johnson welded together the first snowmobile in a machine shop in Roseau, Minnesota. That machine grew into a company that spent the next few decades pushing snowmobile design forward before moving into four wheelers in the 1980s and side-by-sides in the 2000s. The company is publicly traded today, still Minnesota rooted, but now headquartered in Medina, having long since outgrown its original shop.

The lineup now splits between off-road vehicles and snowmobiles. On the off-road side, the Sportsman covers utility and recreation ATV work, while RANGER, RZR and GENERAL handle side-by-side duty from farm chores to high speed dune running. The snowmobile side spans trail sleds like the Indy, mountain machines like the RMK, and crossover and utility models like the Switchback and Titan, aimed at riders who want one sled to do more than one job.

Polaris owners tend to describe a machine that is fast, feature heavy and genuinely capable, sitting alongside a reliability reputation that is more mixed than the Japanese competition. Electrical gremlins, clutch and belt wear, and warranty disputes come up often enough in owner forums to be worth knowing before you buy, and used values slip a bit faster than a comparable Honda or Yamaha as a result. What keeps people coming back is the dealer network, which is the largest in the industry and makes parts, service and trade ins easy to find almost anywhere, plus a snowmobile following that is genuinely loyal once someone has ridden an RMK or an Indy through a real winter.
