Ski-Doo

Ski-Doo traces back to Joseph-Armand Bombardier, a Quebec mechanic who spent the 1930s trying to build a vehicle that could cross deep snow. He patented a snow vehicle in 1937 and founded a company in Valcourt in 1942, but it was the 1959 launch of the first Ski-Doo, a lightweight single-rider machine meant to replace the dog sled for trappers and hunters, that created the recreational snowmobile as most riders know it today. The name itself came from a printing mistake: the machine was meant to be called the Ski-Dog. That recreational business grew inside the larger Bombardier transportation company for decades before it was sold off and relaunched in 2003 as the independent, publicly traded BRP.

Today Ski-Doo builds a full spread of snowmobiles under the BRP badge: the MXZ for trail performance, the Summit for deep-snow mountain riding, the Renegade and Grand Touring for long days on groomed trail, the Backcountry and Tundra as crossovers, and the Skandic for farm and trapline work. Nearly all of them sit on the REV Gen5 chassis and run Rotax engines, either E-TEC two-strokes or ACE four-strokes, including the 850 E-TEC Turbo R, the first factory-built turbocharged two-stroke in the industry. The brand's engineering reputation rests on tight integration of engine and chassis, with the narrow-profile mountain sled as the clearest example of that approach.

Rotax engines have earned real trust among owners, and E-TEC direct injection has closed much of the reliability gap that once separated two-strokes from four-strokes, though a top end rebuild is still a fact of life once a two-stroke racks up serious hours. Ski-Doo's dealer network is one of the largest in the sled world, spread thick across the snow belt of the US and Canada, which keeps routine service and most parts easy to find, though owners of older or lower-volume models sometimes wait longer than they'd like. Because Ski-Doo sells more sleds than any other brand, used ones move fast and hold value reasonably well, and the mountain lineup in particular keeps a loyal following among riders who rate agility in deep powder above almost everything else.
